Beijing, October 18th—Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, met here today with a delegation of political figures of the Pacific Island Countries(PICs) led by Lord Tu'ivakano, former Prime Minister of Tonga.

Wang welcomed the delegation, which was on a visit to China and attending the Fourth China-Pacific Island Countries Political Leadership Dialogue. He said, China has a long-standing relationship with the PICs. In 2018, President Xi Jinping met with leaders of the PICs having diplomatic ties with China, during which both sides elevated bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership and opened a new chapter in the exchange history. The China-PICs relations serve as a model of friendly exchanges, cooperation and unity between countries of different regions, sizes, and political systems. China is ready to work with the PICs to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of both sides, intensify high-level exchanges, consolidate political mutual trust, expand pragmatic cooperation, and foster greater connections between the peoples, so as to building an even closer China-PICs community with a shared future.

Wang said, a growing China means a greater force for peace and for justice. China develops its relations with the PICs in the spirit of equal treatment, mutual support and common development. China-PICs cooperation aims to help each other under the South-South Cooperation framework. It is not targeted against any third party or subject to the interference by any third party. We will, according to the will of the PICs, continue cooperation in various fields, and work with other countries to promote trilateral or multilateral cooperation in the region, in a bid to contribute to regional stability, development, and prosperity. Exchanges between political parties are a key component of bilateral relations. China hopes to, together with the PICs, enhance political party exchanges, strengthen experience exchange in state governance and administration, support each other in pursuing development paths suited to respective national circumstances, and be reliable strategic partners in each other’s development in the long run.

Lord Tu'ivakano and other PICs leaders expressed that the PICs have enjoyed friendly relations with China for long. In recent years, the two sides have actively engaged in Belt and Road cooperation, which has significantly boosted the economic growth, employment and livelihoods of the PICs. The PICs believe that there is no better way to promote world peace and development than jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative. Boasting vast territories and abundant resources, the PICs have great potential in sectors such as agriculture and tourism, but face new challenges as well. The PICs adhere to the one-China principle, and are committed to deepening political party dialogue with China, expanding practical cooperation in various fields, and strengthening friendship between the peoples, in a bid to push bilateral relations for greater development.
