From September 19th to 21st, Commemoration of the International Day of Peace 2024 themed "Upholding a Shared Future to Build a World of Peaceful Coexistence was held in Jinan and Weifang, Shandong Province. The event was guided by the International Department of the CPC Central Committee and co-hosted by the Chinese People’s Association for Peace and Disarmament and the Shandong Provincial Government, bringing together representatives from over 80 countries and more than 100 political organizations, peace groups, and security think tanks.
Foreign guests highly praised China’s long-standing efforts and contributions to promoting global peace and security. They expressed their willingness to join the Chinese side in upholding the concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind and in advancing the implementation of the three major global initiatives, and working together to safeguard peace and tranquility on Earth.
"Achieving peace requires the efforts of every country and the unity of the entire international community."
Peace is the greatest common interest of all people and their most profound shared aspiration. However, the world we live in today is far from peaceful, with growing deficits in peace, development, security, and governance, urgently requiring strong international action to address these challenges.
Our world needs peace. Peace is the ultimate prize for all humanity, said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in a video message sent to the commemoration. He emphasized that the international community must cultivate a culture of peace and replace divisions with justice, equality, and hope for all.
Peace is not an outcome, but a process, said former Colombian President Ernesto Samper. Achieving peace requires the efforts of every country and the unity of the entire international community. A unified voice and collective effort from the Global South countries can help bring about peace, he said.
Countries should join hands; partnerships are essential for building a peaceful world, said Charles Mubita, SWAPO Party Politburo member and Rector of the SWAPO Party School in Namibia. He emphasized that only a peaceful environment can provide stability for people’s lives, noting that security is the prerequisite for development, and development is the guarantee of security. Mubita believes that the Global South countries should be committed to building peace together, enhancing capacity building, and jointly creating a more equitable and sustainable world.
Former President of the Swiss Confederation Ueli Maurer said that we need tolerance and respect, as mutual respect is the foundation of all cooperation, stressing that the international community should engage in equal communication, respect and accept differing viewpoints, with this acceptance not based on coercion.
Former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe noted that we must work with more countries to build a more inclusive world. To achieve this goal, we must deeply understand the uniqueness and complexity of each nation.
Kazakhstan has a proverb,"Where there is unity, happiness will follow," said Kazybek Shaikh, Chairman of Foundation of Peace of Kazakhstan. He highlighted that through a series of concrete actions, China has demonstrated its sincere commitment to maintaining world peace and its determination to promote global development and cooperation. China actively fosters mutually beneficial cooperation between countries, contributing to the preservation of global peace and stability.
"The concrete achievements of the three global initiatives have become widely welcomed global public goods."
Let the "grass of happiness" benefit more people, and let the seeds of friendship and peace be sown around the world! During a story sharing and art performance themed on safeguarding peace for a shared future Lin Dongmei, daughter of Lin Zhanxi, the inventor of the Juncao technology, and Han Dong, the lead actor in the TV series Happiness Juncao, shared stories about how Lin Zhanxi and his team promoted Juncao technology in 106 countries and regions, helping to alleviate global poverty. The United Nations Peace Medal recipient Si Chongchang, drawing from his two peacekeeping missions in Mali, exclaimed that the Earth is our common home, and peace needs to be safeguarded by all of us. These deeply touching stories resonated strongly with the audience.
As a staunch force for safeguarding world peace, China has always placed its own development within the larger context of human development, growing itself by maintaining global peace and contributing to peace through its own development. Guests praised China’s proposal of the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind, along with the Global Development Initiative (GDI), Global Security Initiative (GSI), and Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), viewing these key ideas as pointing the way forward to tackling peace deficit and addressing security challenges.
The GSI is of great significance to maintaining world peace and security, said Gashaw Ayferam Endaylal, Researcher Fellow at the Institute of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, noting that the GSI provides a framework for the international community to address shared security concerns and encourages countries to unite in the pursuit of peace and development.
The GDI provides a platform for cooperation in key areas and the establishment of partnerships, which is conducive to deepening practical cooperation, enhancing knowledge exchange, and benefiting developing countries broadly, said Victor Gaute, Vice President of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples. He believes that the advocacy for inclusive and diverse ideals under the GDI helps promote balanced, coordinated, and shared development among nations. We highly appreciate the efforts of the Chinese side in practicing true multilateralism and creating more opportunities for the Global South countries, he noted.
Suhail Mahmood, Director General of the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad in Pakistan, commented that achieving universal security requires inclusive security dialogues and multilateral mechanisms that promote security cooperation. The tangible results from the implementation of the three major global initiatives have become widely welcomed global public goods, earning high praise from many countries, especially those in the Global South, he said.
"More proactive actions are needed to strengthen the efforts of the international community to safeguard multilateralism."
During the event, guests also visited Qianquezhuang Village in Hanting District of Weifang City, Shandong Province, to learn about the life of the villagers. They toured local equipment manufacturing and high-tech enterprises to gain insights into the development of the region. The guests visited the Weihsien West Civilians Concentration Camp Site Museum, reflecting on the suffering caused by war and appreciating the value of peace.
The achievements of China’s economic development and technological progress have left a deep impression on me. Without peace as a fundamental premise and the active engagement and cooperation with other countries, these achievements would not have been possible, said Jozef A. Haber, President of the Civic Association "Polish house" of Poland. He emphasized that countries should strengthen cultural exchanges and mutual learning to promote understanding and form broader consensus.
The concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind and the proposal of the three major global initiatives are timely, stated Helga Zepp LaRouche, Founder and Chairman of the Schiller Institute in Germany. Multilateralism is extremely important. The international community must rely on collective strength to maintain world peace. Multilateral mechanisms like BRICS cooperation mechanism and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization must take more active action to enhance the international community’s ability to uphold multilateralism, he said. He expressed his appreciation for China’s efforts in articulating these important ideas and initiatives, which have outlined a blueprint for the future.
Sommad Pholsena, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly of Laos and Chairman of the Lao Committee for Peace and Solidarity, thanked China for its contributions to promoting world peace, security, and development. He noted that the year 2024 marks the 70th anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. Over the past 70 years, these principles have become basic norms and principles of international relations and international law that are open, inclusive, and universally applicable, still holding significant relevance today. He also highlighted China’s important role in addressing non-traditional security issues like climate change, ecological environment, and food security, and its commitment to promoting regional and international peace, stability, and sustainable development.
We strongly agree with and appreciate the three major global initiatives proposed by the Chinese side. Honduras views China as a benchmark for development and strives tirelessly towards it, said Cindy Rodriguez, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Honduras. She emphasized that practicing multilateralism and promoting South-South cooperation is crucial. Only through global unity and cooperation can we achieve true progress and continually advance human civilization.
